Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach based on the idea that our minds are made up of many “parts.” These parts often carry different feelings, beliefs, and roles. For example, you might have a part that is self-critical, a part that wants to keep you safe, or a part that holds painful emotions from the past.
At the core of IFS is the belief that everyone also has a calm, compassionate inner presence—called the Self—that can help guide the healing process.
Key principles of IFS include:
-
We are made up of many inner parts, and each part has a purpose.
-
No part is “bad”—even if it causes difficulties, it’s usually trying to protect us in some way.
-
Healing happens when we learn to approach our parts with curiosity, compassion, and acceptance.
-
The Self can help lead the inner system toward balance and harmony.
IFS may be a good fit if you experience:
IFS can be helpful for anyone who feels “stuck” in patterns of thought, emotion, or behavior, including those struggling with:
-
Anxiety or depression
-
Self-criticism or perfectionism
-
Trauma and painful past experiences
-
Feeling conflicted or “torn” inside
-
Difficulties with emotional regulation
-
Relationship struggles
IFS is especially useful for people who want a deeper understanding of themselves and a compassionate approach to inner healing.
How does it work?
In IFS, therapy involves getting to know your different parts and creating a more compassionate relationship with them. With the support of your therapist, you might:
-
Notice the different voices, feelings, or impulses you carry.
-
Explore the roles your parts play and how they’re trying to help you.
-
Create space for your Self to connect with your parts in a more understanding and healing way.
IFS is gentle and non-pathologizing. It doesn’t try to “get rid of” parts of you, but instead helps all of your parts feel seen, understood, and less stuck in extreme roles.
What does IFS treatment look like?
An IFS-informed session may include:
-
Slowing down and tuning into your inner experience.
-
Identifying and naming the different parts that are showing up.
-
Listening to your parts with curiosity, without judgment.
-
Helping parts release burdens they’ve been carrying so they can take on healthier roles.
The process can feel like guided inner exploration, where you learn to connect with your parts in a new, healing way.

“Your parts have a story to tell—IFS helps you hear it.”

IFS FAQs
Do I need to know my “parts” before starting?
Not at all. Part of the process is learning to recognize and connect with them. Your therapist will guide you through this exploration at a pace that feels right for you.
Is IFS only for people with trauma?
No. While IFS is very effective for healing trauma, it can also help with everyday challenges like stress, inner conflict, and self-esteem struggles.
Will I lose control or “get stuck” in a part?
The process is guided and intentional. The goal isn’t to be overwhelmed by your parts, but to connect with them in a safe and supportive way.
What makes IFS different from other therapies?
IFS doesn’t try to eliminate or suppress parts of you—it helps you build a compassionate relationship with them, which often leads to deeper healing and integration.
