What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach designed to help people process and heal from distressing memories, experiences, or beliefs. Instead of focusing only on talking about the past, EMDR helps the brain reprocess difficult experiences in a way that reduces their emotional intensity.
The key principle of EMDR is that the brain, when given the right support, knows how to heal. By using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds), EMDR helps “unstick” memories or feelings that are stored in a way that continues to cause distress.
EMDR can be helpful for people experiencing:
-
Trauma or PTSD
-
Anxiety or panic
-
Grief and loss
-
Negative self-beliefs (“I’m not good enough”)
-
Depression
-
Distressing memories that still feel “fresh”
-
Stress related to medical issues, accidents, or other difficult events
How does it work?
When a painful event happens, the brain doesn’t always process it fully. The memory can become “frozen,” along with the emotions, beliefs, and sensations tied to it. EMDR helps reprocess those memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming.
In practice, EMDR combines:
-
Identifying distressing memories or beliefs that feel stuck.
-
Using bilateral stimulation (like guided eye movements or taps).
-
Allowing the brain to reprocess the experience in a safe, supported way.
-
Replacing painful beliefs (“I’m powerless,” “I’m not safe”) with healthier, more balanced ones.
What can I expect treatment to consist of and look like?
An EMDR-informed approach usually unfolds in phases:
-
Preparation — building coping skills, grounding, and ensuring you feel safe.
-
Identifying targets — deciding together which memories, beliefs, or experiences to focus on.
-
Processing — using bilateral stimulation while recalling aspects of the memory in a safe and guided way.
-
Integration — noticing the shift, and reinforcing more helpful and empowering beliefs.
Throughout, you are always in control. The goal is not to relive trauma, but to process it in a way that feels manageable and healing.

“Your brain knows how to heal—EMDR helps unlock it.”

EMDR FAQs
Will I have to relive my trauma?
No. EMDR is not about re-traumatizing yourself. The process is guided and intentional, allowing your brain to reprocess painful experiences in a safe and supported way.
How long does EMDR take?
It varies. Some people notice relief in just a few sessions, while others need more time to address multiple experiences or deeper wounds. The pace is always guided by your comfort and readiness.
Is EMDR only for PTSD?
No. While EMDR was developed for trauma, research shows it can be helpful for anxiety, depression, grief, and many other concerns.
How is EMDR different from traditional talk therapy?
Rather than only talking through memories, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess them at a deeper level—often leading to shifts that feel quicker and more lasting.
